Nearly 40 % of Kiwis get fewer than seven hours of sleep each night, well short of the optimal seven to nine hours we need for our bodies to recharge, revive and restore. This high rate of sleeplessness is a worry as a lack of sleep is linked to psychological distress, a poorer sense of health, weight gain, and lower self-esteem and life satisfaction. If you’re not getting enough sleep, we believe we can help through our black out blinds - also known as roller blockout blinds.
In many cases, New Zealand bedrooms are not dark enough to promote good sleep. Our internal body clock controls our natural sleep-wake cycle and makes us feel awake during the day and sleepy at night. Light is the biggest factor in helping our internal clock get our bodies ready for sleep. Before electricity, humans woke and slept with the rising and setting of the sun, but home lighting, electronics, and light pollution from outside have made it more difficult for us to get to sleep. We need things to be darker, and here’s why.
Melatonin is a serotonin-derived hormone that promotes sleepiness. The pineal gland begins to produce melatonin in response to darkness but exposure to light stops the production of melatonin. When this occurs before bed or during sleep, it can interfere with the sleep-wake cycle. Research has shown that being in a fully lit room before trying to sleep results in delayed and shortened production of melatonin compared to dim lighting. So, the less bright it is before you sleep the better. And while you’re sleeping, our black out blinds will continue to keep things sufficiently dark.
The window furnishings you have now may keep out a certain amount of light - but enough light may still leak through the material to disrupt your sleep. If you’re in a constant sleep-wake-sleep cycle during the night, it could be that there is too much light in your room. Our black out blinds are the solution. All the fabrics in this range completely block out light - that means no light penetrates the fabric. As well as providing a greater degree of darkness, they also give full privacy and reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer when fully down. Plus, they are stylish additions to your bedroom decor thanks to the range of gorgeous fabrics.
Our roller blockout blinds are ideal for shift workers who sleep during the day, families with young children, or anyone that needs to create complete darkness to get a better and healthier nights sleep. Click here for a free quote...and sweet dreams!
